Adopting a Vegetarian Lifestyle Could Help Prevent Cancer

As per Dr. Kalpagam Polasa, a vegetarian diet, full of colorful fruits and veggies could be the key to a healthier lifestyle free of diseases like cancer. Dr. Kalpagam, who is the head of the Food and Drug Toxicology Research Centre at the National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, believes that a diet consisting of a higher ratio of fruits and vegetables cold help keep cardiovascular diseases and cancer at bay.

Dr. Polasa, who has published 85 papers in national and international journals, shared these observations during the talk she gave at the golden jubilee regional symposium 2011 of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. The talk, which was given on Friday at the campus in Hyderabad, India was titled ‘Nutrition- The Role of Vegetables and Fruits in Chronic Disorders’.
The weight loss capabilities of a diet composed mainly of fruits and vegetables is widely known.

But, the less commonly known fact is that they are also a wonderful source of vitamins, dietary fiber and minerals, which play a vital role in promoting a healthier lifestyle. Dr Polasa stated “Five to seven servings of fruits and vegetables per day per person are highly desirable”.

She said that instead of visiting the doctor after acquiring an ailment, one should concentrate on eating nutritious foods to prevent the diseases in the first place. She also stated that in addition to helping to fight cancer and cardiovascular diseases, a diet composed primarily of fruits and vegetables could also prevent diseases like Type 2 diabetes, arthritis, immunological disorders and obesity.

There is unmistakable evidence to support the analogy that turning vegetarian or vegan can help in cancer prevention. The advantages of vegetarian diet are based on the variety of nutrients and essential oils that vegetarian diet contains. Many of these vegetarian diets contain ample amount of such ingredients that play a key role in cancer prevention.
